Taiwan's ETC system wins award for excellence

Taipei, July 3 (CNA) Taiwan's electronic toll collection (ETC) system has won an award given by the U.S.-based International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA), according to the National Freeway Bureau on Friday. The ETC system was selected as the winner of the 2015 Toll Excellence Award for customer service and marketing outreach, the bureau said. The award ceremony will be held in Ireland in August. Wu Mu-fu (???), deputy director-general of the bureau, said Taiwan's ETC was introduced in two stages. Manual and electronic toll collections were both in place for a while before the country switched completely to the ETC system at the end of 2013, he said. Also, the ETC was changed from an infrared-based system to the current eTag system, which the IBTTA believes is a first in the world, Wu said. Although there was some controversy over the eTag system at the start, the problems were quickly resolved, he said. At present, the accuracy of the eTag toll deduction system is 99.8 percent, and the usage rate is 93 percent, he added. (By Wang Shu-fen and Y.F. Low)
