Nearly half of Taiwan's export orders made in China, Hong Kong

Taipei, June 30 (CNA) Taiwan's dependence on China as a production base has grown in recent years, with the percentage of Taiwan's export orders made in China or Hong Kong rising nearly 4 percentage points over the past five years, according to the latest statistics.
A total of 47.1 percent of export orders received in Taiwan were produced in China or Hong Kong in 2014, up from 43.8 percent in 2010, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said in its annual survey of overseas production of export orders released Tuesday. The figure has remained relatively steady since 2011, however, ranging from a low of 46.8 percent in 2011 to a high of 47.4 percent in 2012. Overall, the percentage of Taiwan's export orders produced overseas has risen from 50.4 percent in 2010 to 52.6 percent in 2014, the figures showed.
In 2014, Taiwan received US$472.8 billion in export orders.
The fastest growth in overseas production of export orders in the past two years has come outside Asia.
The percentage of orders manufactured in the U.S., Europe and other areas outside of Asia rose 0.8 percentage points to 1.4 percent in 2013 and by another 1.7 percentage points to 3.1 percent in 2014. The ministry has attributed the growth to some Taiwanese telecommunications and electronics businesses manufacturing goods at subsidiaries in those areas. Taiwanese companies are also producing more goods for export in export markets. In 2014, 23.1 percent of export orders were delivered in the markets where they were produced, up from 17.2 percent in 2010.
2010 was the first year for which the ministry conducted the survey. The figures also showed that among Taiwan's major export items, information/communications technology and electronics products were the least likely to be made at home, with only 9.1 percent of those goods for export made in Taiwan in 2014. In contrast, 86 percent of the orders for plastic and rubber products last year were produced in Taiwan. (By Huang Chiao-wen and Elizabeth Hsu)
