Water Park explosion claims first victim

Taipei, June 29 (CNA)
The dust explosion at a water park in New Taipei, the worst disaster of its kind in Taiwan's history, claimed its first victim Monday, while dozens of others who were injured in the disaster were still fighting for their lives, doctors and officials said.
Doctors at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital in Taichung said that 20 year-old Lee Pei-yun would be taken off a ventilator as soon as her family arrived at the hospital.
Lee, 20, suffered second-degree burns over 90 percent of her body. Her younger brother also sustained burns to 90 percent of his body when a heavy concentration of fine corn dust ignited at the Color Play Asia party late Saturday.
The boy, who has recently graduated from elementary school, is being treated at a hospital in Taipei City.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, 498 people were injured in the explosion and are being treated at 42 hospitals around the country. Among them, 202 are listed as in serious condition. (By Jay Chen)
