Taipei mayor to preside over Shetzu Island development meeting

Taipei, June 27 (CNA)
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je will preside over a development project meeting for Shetzu Island of Taipei City Saturday to learn more about the views and needs of the residents there.
The city's Department of Urban Development said the low-lying small island, located to the northwest of Taipei at the confluence of the Keelung and Tamshui rivers in Taipei's Shihlin District, have been under a development ban since 1970 due to flooding concerns.
But after Ko assumed office in late 2014, he decided to reactivate development, the department said, adding that it has three development proposals.
The city government, working along the lines of public participation and self-determination by residents, will push for its development and the new development projects are expected to be unveiled in December. Lin Jou-min, head of the Department of Urban Development, said that a lot of residents on the island hope to improve their quality of life, but also like the pace and environment of their island, noting that all these factors will be included when considering the development projects.
