Police: TV journalist, gay activist slain in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- Honduran authorities say a journalist and gay activist has been slain in a Caribbean coastal city.

A police statement Tuesday says Juan Carlos Cruz Andara was stabbed 25 times by unknown attackers at his home in Puerto Cortes.

The 42-year-old Cruz Andara was a TV presenter and producer at Setcom Cable in Puerto Cortes, as well as being a customs agent.

It was not immediately clear whether the killing was related to his work as a reporter or gay activist.

At least 54 journalists, presenters and media executives have been slain in Honduras in the last 12 years, along with 192 people from the LGBT community since 2008.

Roughly 9 in 10 of those cases have not been solved, a reflection of the country's 96 percent overall criminal impunity rate.
