Cross-strait pacts on meteorology, seismic monitoring take effect

Taipei, June 24 (CNA) Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) and the China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) announced simultaneously Wednesday the implementation of two cooperation agreements on meteorology and seismic monitoring, which were signed by the two sides in February 2014.
The signing of the two pacts was aimed at better safeguarding lives and property on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in the event of natural disasters.
With the two accords taking effect, the two sides will enhance their exchange of experience and expertise in scientific and technological development, and effectively improve their monitoring and early warning capabilities for extreme weather and major earthquakes.
According to a statement issued by the SEF, the two sides will establish mechanisms and channels for the exchange of meteorological and seismic monitoring information between their weather forecasters, organize seminars on seismic-monitoring technologies and earthquake prediction techniques, and promote exchange of visits by relevant personnel.
