TSMC remains largest corporate taxpayer in northern Taiwan

Taipei, June 24 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.(TSMC) has retained the title as the largest corporate taxpayer in northern Taiwan, the National Taxation Bureau under the Ministry of Finance said Wednesday.
According to statistics compiled by the bureau's northern area division, TSMC, the world's largest contract chip maker, paid more than NT$20 billion (US$645 million) in corporate income tax in 2014, the most of any enterprise operating in northern Taiwan.
In 2014, TSMC posted a net profit of NT$302.10 billion, up 40.2 percent from a year earlier and the highest in the company's history, because of strong global demand for mobile devices.
It had earnings per share of NT$10.18 in 2014, also a new high, up from NT$7.26 in 2013.
The taxation bureau collected NT$271.38 billion in corporate income taxes in the taxpaying month of May, up 14.6 percent from a year earlier.
The bureau's northern area division, which covers New Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu cities and Hsinchu County, collected NT$116.02 billion in corporate income taxes last year, accounting for 42.7 percent of the total.
Much of the tax revenue came from companies located in the Hsinchu Science Park, which houses Taiwan's major high-tech firms, like TSMC, according to the northern area division.
It said that Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker and assembles iPhones and iPads, paid about NT$10 billion in corporate income taxes last year, the second highest amount among any company in northern Taiwan.
A foreign company ranked as the third largest taxpayer in northern Taiwan last year, but the division did not identify it.
Integrated circuit designer MediaTek Inc. and contract notebook computer maker Quanta Computer Inc. came in fourth and fifth, respectively. (By Wei Shu and Frances Huang)
