'My mission is to help this brand survive': Acer CEO

Taipei, June 23 (CNA)
Jason Chen, corporate president and chief executive officer of Acer Inc., declared at the company's annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday that his mission at Acer is to help the company survive and generate stable profits.
"The most important mission for me in joining Acer is to help this brand survive. Where there's life, there's hope," said Chen, who joined Acer in January 2014 from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) The 54-year-old CEO, who reversed three consecutive years of operating losses in 2014, said he expects Acer to continue to move forward as long as the company can generate stable profits, which will enable Acer to develop strategies for its future growth.
"At least we need to keep improving our operating income, which is the primary task," Chen said when answering a question about Acer's earnings target for 2015.
Acer Chairman George Huang said Acer had not made any forecast for its full-year earnings in 2015 but would continue to follow a strategy of transforming itself to address the challenges posed by the shrinking PC industry.
In 2014, Acer posted an 8.5 percent drop in revenues but recorded a slender net profit of NT$1.79 billion (US$6.46 million), ending three consecutive years of losses.
In the first three months of 2015, the Taiwanese company reported a higher-than-expected net profit on the back of effective cost controls and inventory management.
In April, however, Acer reported its lowest monthly revenue in nearly nine years as consumers awaited the launch of Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows 10 operating system later this year, raising concerns over a possible quarterly loss in the April-June period.
As of 10:22 a.m. Tuesday, Acer shares had risen 0.96 percent to NT$15.75 in trading in Taipei. (By Jeffrey Wu)
