Taiwanese groups to perform in Avignon Festival Off

Taipei, June 22 (CNA) Five Taiwanese groups are set to perform in the upcoming Avignon Festival Off, bringing a diverse lineup of dance, drama and visual arts performances to French audiences.
From July 5 to 25, Riverbed Theatre, 8213 Physical Dance Theater, Langasan Theatre, Horse and In Theatre will stage shows at the Avignon Festival Off, a fringe event that parallels the annual Avignon Festival, the Ministry of Culture said Monday.
Riverbed Theatre will perform "R瞚es de riz", a production that draws inspiration from traditional Liyuan opera and Nanguan dance, and 8213 Physical Dance Theater will present an experimental dance theater piece called "Unlimited Soul".
Langasan Theatre, meanwhile, will stage the production "Misa-Lisin", which includes ancient indigenous Amis tunes, rituals and myths.
"FreeSteps" by dance group Horse will focus on six dancers and their movements, rhythms and moods, and In Theatre's "Tsch?s!! Bunny" will explore the meaning of parting and rebirth through humor and dance.
Culture Minister Hung Meng-chi said a priority for his ministry -- and a big reason why it is drawn to Avignon Festival Off -- is to promote Taiwan's performing arts and literature abroad, especially its experimental theaters.
Taiwan is the only country in the Chinese-language world that does not have a "red line" limiting free speech, allowing experimental theater groups to express themselves freely, Hung said.
"This is our biggest cultural asset and something we should show the international community," Hung said.
Horse will stage its production at the CDC-Les Hivernales from July 10 to 20, while the four other groups will perform at the Theatre La Condition des Soies from July 5 to 25. (By Christie Chen)
