'Pepper' robots sell out in one minute

The initial batch of Pepper robots, developed by Japanese mobile carrier SoftBank Corp. and manufactured by Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, sold out in one minute on the first day of sales in Japan.

The 1,000 units of Pepper available for purchase in June sold out in 60 seconds when online orders started at 10 a.m. on Saturday, according to a statement from SoftBank Robotics Corp., a robotics venture by SoftBank, Foxconn and Chinese e-commerce leader Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

Orders are no longer being taken and additional sales of Pepper, which sells for 198,000 Japanese yen (US$1,624), are scheduled to be announced on SoftBank's website in July.

In addition to Pepper's emotion recognition functions, the robot generates emotions autonomously by processing information from its cameras, touch sensors, accelerometer and other sensors within its "endocrine-type multi-layer neural network," SoftBank said.

The initial sales launch came two days after Foxconn and Alibaba agreed that they would each invest 14.5 billion Japanese yen (US$117.4 million) in SoftBank Robotics, with the aim of developing the robotics industry on a worldwide scale.

Under the agreement, upon completion of the investment by Alibaba and Foxconn, SoftBank will own 60 percent of SoftBank Robotics, while Alibaba and Foxconn will each hold a 20 percent stake.

Despite Pepper's backers, some industry observers remain cautious about the business outlook for the robot.

"Pepper is still way overpriced for its functionality and does not present a compelling emotional purchase need, except for techies, early adopters and older Japanese women," Lem Fugitt, a Japan-based robotics observer who runs, said in an email to IDG News Service on June 19.
