AUO's ultra-HD panel market share up in May

AUO's ultra-HD panel market share up in May

Taipei, June 18 (CNA) Taiwan-based flat panel maker AU Optronics Corp. (AUO, ??) enjoyed an increase in the global 4K ultra-high definition display market share in May, according to a research report released by Taipei-based market advisory firm TrendForce Corp. In the report, TrendForce said that AUO's global 4K panel market share rose to 9 percent in May from 8 percent recorded in April. Market analysts said that the increase reflected the Taiwanese firm's intensified efforts to promote its ultra HD products. TrendForce said that Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea also witnessed its global market share of 4K displays rise to 43 percent in May from April's 35 percent, while China's BOE Technology Group Co. (???) market share grew to 6 percent in May from 4 percent seen in April. TrendForce said, however, that Innolux Corp. (??), another Taiwanese major flat panel supplier, and South Korea's LG Display Co., recorded lower shipments in May than a month earlier due to a decline in sales of 49-inch, 50-inch and 55-inch displays. The report did not give specific numbers on Innolux's and LGD's sales and market shares. In May, worldwide 4K panel shipments totaled 3.1 million units, down 2 percent from April, as Chinese buyers slowed their pace in building up inventories after China's May 1 Labor Day holiday. Due to the lower shipments, the penetration ratio of 4K panels in the global market fell to 13.6 percent in May from 14.4 percent recorded in April. The figure still surpassed 7.8 percent seen for the entire 2014 and 8.7 percent for the whole first quarter of this year, TrendForce said. In May, 55-inch 4K panels served as the market mainstream, with a market share rising to 31 percent from April's 29 percent, while the market share of 49-inch 4K panels and 50-inch screens fell to 12 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively, from 15 percent and 14 percent, the report showed. TrendForce said that a market trend for consumers to buy more 4K TVs remains unchanged and that it expects the penetration ratio of the panels is expected to rise to 17 percent in 2015. In May, global flat panel shipments totaled 22.72 million units, up 4 percent from April and up 9 percent from a year earlier. (By Pan Chi-i and Frances Huang)
