China official urges cross-strait cooperation in telecommunications

Taipei, June 15 (CNA) Liu Lihua (???), vice minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT, ?????), on Monday called for closer cooperation with Taiwan in the field of telecommunications. At an annual cross strait telecommunication conference in Hsinchu, Liu said China and Taiwan should work more closely on developing telecom technology. While China and Taiwan have made great progress in telecom development, they now need to take the next step by working together in areas such as telecom business management, roaming services and Internet information services, said Liu, who is also chairman of the China Association of Communications Enterprises (????????). In addition, China and Taiwan should cooperate with each other to draft specifications for 5G telecom services in the future, while setting their sights on the development of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), Liu said. Also speaking at the conference, Shen Jong-chin (???), vice minister of Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, said Taiwan and China should take advantage of the fast growing Internet business in the global market to create a "win-win" situation. In Taiwan, the government has unveiled a 4.0 industrial productivity program to strengthen the country's industrial development, Shen noted. China, meanwhile, has launched its "Made in China 2025" plan, endorsed by Premier Li Keqiang (???), to promote its manufacturing sector, he said. With their similar goals for industrial development, the two sides should work together in the telecom business, not only in hardware manufacturing but also in software development, to create value-added products and eventually boost production output, Shen said. Douglas Hsu (???), chairman of the Taiwan-based telecom operator Far Eastone Telecommunications Co. (????), said at the conference that he will be pleased to see closer exchanges in the cross-Taiwan Strait telecom businesses after years of cooperation. In addition to discussing Internet development, the representatives from Taiwan and China at the telecom conference will also focus on other issues like cloud-technology based computing, big data market outlook and future market trends for handheld and wearable devices. MediaTek Inc. (???), a Taiwan-based integrated circuit designer, was scheduled to sign a cooperative agreement with the China Academy of Information and Telecommunications Technology (?????????) at the conference later in the day.
