Wild Lecture holds talk on nationality law

According to the current nationality law, the person who applies for Taiwanese citizenship should provide proof of giving up the nationality of the original country in one year, or the application will expire. Hundreds of foreign spouses suffered from unexpected incidents during their waiting period and saw their applications denied by the government, becoming stateless persons.

The Wild Lecture invited the executive secretary of the TransAsia Sisters Association, Hung Man-chi, to share the examples of cases of new immigrants who suffered from the obstruction due to the nationality law.

Nguyen, a Vietnamese spouse who gave up her Vietnamese citizenship in order to get the Taiwanese ID, ran into a car accident and was accused of Offenses of Causing Bodily Harm with Negligence. According to the nationality law, the applicants have to show good conduct and the absence of any criminal record. Due to the charge, Nguyen’s application was denied, so she ended up as a stateless person.
