Highlanders beat Blues 44-7 in Super Rugby

The Dunedin-based Highlanders staked a claim to their first home playoff match in Super Rugby in 16 years when they took a four-try bonus point from a 44-7 win over the Auckland-based Blues on Friday.

The Highlanders' 11th win in 16 matches lifted them to fourth in the championship at the start of the last round of the regular season; a position from which they can be dislodged only if the Hamilton-based Chiefs beat the first-place Hurricanes with a bonus point on Saturday.

In scoring seven tries to one and winning by a margin of 37 points, the Highlanders likely also put themselves out of the range of the Chiefs, who will have to beat the Hurricanes by 38 points to have any chance of finishing fourth.

The fourth-placed team is home to the fifth-placed team in next weekend's first playoffs round.
