Market & Commodity ■ The Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) main index opened 7.66 points lower to 9,294.83 Friday, with turnover reaching NT$1.59 billion. (Taiwan News) World News ■ China's former security chief is sentenced to life in prison on corruption charges, in a victory for President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign seen as further cementing his authority by removing a potential challenger. (AP) ■ South Korea reports a 10th death from the MERS virus, although officials say they believe the disease has peaked. (AP) ■ South Korea's central bank lowers its key interest rate to a historic low, responding to a slump in exports and the prospect the economy will be hurt by the outbreak of the deadly MERS virus. (AP) ■ Indonesia's Foreign Ministry says it is "very concerned" by claims that Australian officials paid the crew of a boat carrying 65 migrants, including children and a pregnant woman, to return to Indonesian waters. (AP) ■ The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) continues to spread, South Korea has confirmed 14 new cases, including a 39 years old pregnant woman and a 25 years old policeman. (Taiwan News) ■ The dog meat market in China has always sparked controversies in many animal right groups and the general public. After four years of investigation into the dog meat market of China, Animal Asia, a Hong Kong-based charity that seeks to end cruelty to animals in Asia, has published their reports on June 11 which claimed that ‘meat dogs’ come from stolen pet and strays. (Taiwan News) Local News ■ At least 59 people were being questioned by prosecutors Thursday evening in an investigation into corruption surrounding the military’s purchase of Clouded Leopard armored vehicles. The total deal was worth NT$7.8 billion (US$252 million), but the manufacturer won the tender for the construction with a NT$4.8 billion (US$155 million) bid, reports said. (Taiwan News) ■ As part of the latest inspections in a long line of food scandals overshadowing food makers in Taiwan, health authorities in Taitung announced Thursday another case of tainted items that contain excessive chemical substances. Among the 44 produce inspected by authorities in Taitung, four types of dried shrimps were found to contain excessive amount of formaldehyde, and three of which also carried traces of sulphur dioxide. (Taiwan News) ■ Premier Mao Chi-kuo urged the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on Thursday to come up with new policies and strategies as Taiwan’s economy is being faced with new challenges. (Taiwan News) ■ As part of the 70th anniversary to commemorate the victory in the defeat of the Japanese in World War II this year, the Republic of China military on Thursday displayed publicly for the first time its newly-acquired Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopter at the Hukou military base in Hsinchu. (Taiwan News) ■ Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng was questioned Thursday at the Legislative Yuan over speculations that he cunningly placed the Deputy Legislative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu in charge of the assembly so that he could move on to other things outside work. (Taiwan News) ■ A dengue fever cluster was reported in Kaohsiung Thursday after three cases of the disease at the same locality were confirmed by local health authorities. The three cases were found at the Nanzih Veterans Home where one 84-year-old resident, and two staff members, one of whom was living in the home. (CNA) ■ U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch said that he echoes the sentiment of President Ma Ying-jeou's speech emphasizing the importance of allies and partnerships in at a video conference jointly sponsored by the Republic of China's Presidential Office and Stanford University on June 2.
