Morocco expels Amnesty team researching immigration issues

RABAT, Morocco (AP) -- Morocco's Interior Ministry has announced the expulsion of a team from the London-based Amnesty International human rights group that was in the country researching immigration issues.

The statement Thursday said the two foreigners on the team didn't have the requisite permission to carry out their research, adding that the government had asked Amnesty to delay the mission until they had obtained the necessary approval.

An Amnesty delegation was most recently in Morocco in May when they delivered a scathing report about the use of torture in the country. The government condemned the report as biased.

At the time, representatives of Amnesty said they had received permission to carry out research into immigration issues.

Amnesty International confirmed the expulsion and said it would soon issue a statement.
