Verratti leaves Italy's squad with injured calf

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) -- Midfielder Marco Verratti has left Italy's training camp with a left calf injury a day before a key match against Croatia.

Coach Antonio Conte already called up AC Milan's Giacomo Bonaventura as a replacement earlier in the week for Verratti, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain.

Other key midfielders on the squad include Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi and Claudio Marchisio

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is also a doubt with an elbow problem.

Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli and Sassuolo striker Simone Zaza withdrew with injuries on Monday and Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi was called up.

Italy faces Group H leader Croatia in Split on Friday in a European Championship qualifier, then meets Portugal in Geneva four days later in a friendly.

The Azzurri are second in the group, two points behind Croatia.
