MERS confirmed cases continues to spread in South Korea

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) continues to spread, South Korea has confirmed 14 new cases, including a 39 years old pregnant woman and a 25 years old policeman.

The Health Ministry’s MERS special response team said that eight of the new 14 cases were infected in Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul, now the most severely hit hospital with 55 patients. The remaining cases caught the virus in Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital.

One of the cases is a pregnant woman, which is a very rare case in the world. According to report, the pregnant woman’s due date is very near so she cannot be treated orally. The medical team will use alternative treatment on her. Another particular concern was a male policeman who was released after he was tested negative for MERS on June 3 but readmitted after his conditions worsened on June 5. His case raises the possibility of the MERS being exposed to the general public, which depends on where he caught the virus.

South Korea has 122 confirmed MERS cases, which is the second highest number of MERS. As of June 10, there are 183 quarantined at medical facilities as potential patients while 3,389 more were isolated at home.
