Kinmen will hold drill to combat MERS

Taipei, June 10 (CNA) The Kinmen County will conduct a drill this week in a bid to keep the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) at bay amid the scare over an outbreak of the epidemic in neighboring South Korea. As of Wednesday noon, the virus has infected 108 and killed nine in South Korea. The health bureau said the drill will be held without warning at Kinmen Hospital, which will simulate a situation in which a 25-year old man returning from mainland China via ferry service is sent to a nearby hospital after having been screened to have fever and cough. At the hospital, simulations presenting five different scenarios throughout the infection control process -- from the patient's admission for treatment, taking samples for analysis, informing revelant authorities and imposing isolation in a negative pressure ward -- will be staged, the bureau said. It added that Lee Chun-ming, director of the Infection Control Center at Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei, will oversee the drill and Centers for Disease Control officials will also take part.
