Japan, Philippines to hold joint drills in West Philippine Sea

Japan and the Philippines plan to hold a joint maritime drill from June 23 to 24 in the South China Sea, a move apparently aimed at paving way for the two sides to cooperate more in the region, according to the Manila Bulletin.
The joint exercise came at a time when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing the country’s parliament to pass security-related bills aiming at laying "legitimate grounds" for the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to exercise the right to collective self-defense.
Japan, which has lifted its ban on armaments exports, is helping the Philippines to boost its maritime forces, while some commentators said its official development assistance to the Philippines was largely used for military purposes.
