20 foreign spouses win the exemplary new immigrant awards

In a recent award ceremony held by the Taoyuan Female New Immigrant Association, 20 of the immigrant spouses and female immigrants received the awards for "Exemplary New Immigrant." Director of the association Hsu Chiu-ping hopes the event will enable foreign spouses adapt to the life in Taiwan.

The association has partnered with the National Immigration Agency (NIA) and other public agencies to encourage foreign spouses learn Chinese and Taiwanese and other skills. They also encourage new immigrants to take part in public affairs. With the help of the association, many of the new immigrants have achieved their own social status in the local society.

Ruan Ching-li, a Vietnamese who graduated from the Chinese Department of Vietnam Pedagogical University, said the biggest difficulty for Vietnamese immigrants to live in Taiwan is the language barrier.

Yuan Yan-shuan, also Vietnamese, also pointed out that the local lifestyle is very similar to Vietnam. She said besides the language barrier, it’s actually easy to adapt to the life in Taiwan.
