Protesters march against air pollution

Taipei, June 6 (CNA) Approximately 10,000 people in nine cities and counties around Taiwan took to the streets Saturday in protest against air pollution. The marches were held simultaneously in Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taichung, and Taipei. The protesters demanded that the government impose an energy tax, expand green spaces, and raise flags in schools to warn of high levels of air pollution. Citing a report by the World Health Organization, the protest organizers said particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) -- referred to as "fine" particles -- can lodge deep in the lungs and are believed to pose a great health risk. The risk of inhaling harmful particles is especially high during activities such as running, hiking and cycling, the organizers said. (By Lin Hsing-meng and Y.F. Low)
