DPP chairwoman in New York to continue U.S. tour

New York, June 5 (CNA) Tsai Ing-wen (???), the chairwoman and presidential candidate of the Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), arrived in New York Friday on the fourth leg of her six-city U.S. tour. On Friday night, Tsai was the guest of honor at a dinner hosted by the Taiwanese expatriate community in New York and attended by some 1,500 supporters. Addressing the gathering, Tsai urged her supporters to "never give up," "stop crying" and allow her to fulfill their expectations next year. Her remarks drew rounds of applause from the audience. On Saturday, Tsai is scheduled to have a breakfast meeting with former U.S. Ambassador to China and Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Winston Lord; Evans J.R. Revere, former U.S. acting assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs; and experts from the National Committee on American Foreign Policy. The discussion is expected to focus on Taiwan-U.S. ties and cross-Taiwan Strait relations. Tsai was in Washington earlier this week for talks with U.S. officials at the National Security Council, the Department of State and the Pentagon. (By Timothy Huang and Y.F. Low)
