Massive earthquake in Japan poses no threat to Taiwan: CWB

Taipei, May 30 (CNA) A magnitude 8.5 earthquake that hit eastern Japan at 7:24 p.m. Saturday is unlikely to affect Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reported that day. The epicenter of the temblor was too deep to cause a tsunami, according to the CWB's earthquake center. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake, which struck near the Ogasawara islands, had its epicenter 590 kilometers in depth. However, the strong quake shook buildings in Tokyo for about a minute, producing an intensity of 4 in the Japanese capital, said Japan Today. The agency also said there was no danger of a tsunami.
