Mercury in Taipei soars to year's high at 36.5 degrees

Taipei, May 30 (CNA) Temperatures in Taipei reached 36.5 degrees Celsius Saturday afternoon, the highest reading seen so far in the northern municipality this year, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The scorching heat was seen at 1:45 p.m. and was the result of warm southwestern winds, while Dawu Township in the southeastern county of Taitung, and Keelung City in northern Taiwan also recorded 36.4 degrees and 36 degrees, respectively, the Bureau said. Temperatures in the nation's capital topped 35.7 degrees the previous day, but forecasters said the sweltering weather could ease up on Sunday as rains are expected across the country.
