Vietnamese takes up role as language teacher in New Taipei City

A mother-tongue language program is being offered in New Taipei City designed to not only offer job opportunities to more than 300 new residents from Vietnam, Thailand, or Indonesia but also to help their next generation residing in Taiwan to reconnect with their roots. The program has kicked off at elementary schools in New Taipei City in line with the Torch Project initiated by the Ministry of Interior for years.

To help foreign spouses adapt to their new life in Taiwan, the government in 2012 launched a New Immigrant Torch Project. The program was designed to promote greater respect for cultural diversity, targeting elementary schools with many students coming from new immigrant families.

Vietnamese language teacher Nguyen Thi Thuy teaching at Da Cheng Elementary School in Sanxia District said that she took up the position as a language teacher at the invitation of the school president. It is a great honor for her to pass down the Vietnamese cultural heritage to the next generations residing on this island, she said.
