Taiwan, an exporter of love: president

Taipei, May 26 (CAN) The Republic of China has become a state that exports love, thanks to its people who volunteer their services overseas, adopt foreign children and donate blood, President Ma Ying-jeou said Tuesday. Ma, who himself has donated blood more than 184 times and has committed to helping 28 local and foreign children, said that more than 1 million local people have offered volunteer services overseas, including 11,000 young people who have served far from home in the last seven years, a fact that bears witness to the Chinese proverb that "love knows no boundaries." Ma made the remarks at the Presidential Office while receiving the 2015 winners of the Love of Lives Medal offered by the Chou Ta-kuan Foundation, a local charity . Noting that the 19 winners were chosen from among 2,341 candidates from around the world, Ma lauded them as role models because of their persistent struggles against adversity in their lives and their refusal to give up their efforts. Notable among them are Lee Young-ae, a well-known South Korean actress and philanthropist; Tore Naerland, a Finnish who cycled around the world to promote peace, despite having only 3 percent of his vision left; and Maria Cristina Kronfle Gomez, a member of the National Assembly of Ecuador whose efforts have helped convert the country to a paradise for the disabled in Latin America. Other winners include Yoshioka Tatsuya, the Japanese founder of the Peace Boat; Feliz Finkbeiner, the German boy who initiated the Plant-for-the-Planet campaign in 2007; and Yu Zhihai, the Chinese social entrepreneur who encourages travelers to bring books to rural schools. The president also lauded the Chou Ta-kuan Foundation, which has honored 310 people with the award since its founding in 1998, describing it as one of the major exporters of Taiwan's love, which has helped to make the country a better place.
