BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- Three-time A-League champion Brisbane Roar has hired ex-Australia forward John Aloisi as head coach for next season, with one of his first assignments set to be against Liverpool in a friendly on July 17.
Aloisi, who scored the winning penalty to secure Australia's place at the 2006 World Cup, had playing stints in the Premier League, and in the Italian and Spanish top-flight competitions across a 20-year career.
He quickly moved into management and became head coach at Melbourne Heart in 2012-13 less the 12 months after retiring as a player.
The 39-year-old Aloisi says the Roar "has defined success in the first 10 years of the A-League and I am determined to ensure the high standards."
He replaces interim coach Frans Thijssen at Brisbane.
