Hou Hsiao-hsien to get NT$5 million reward for winning at Cannes

Taipei, May 25 (CNA) Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (???) will receive a cash reward of NT$5 million (US$163,980) from the Taiwan government for winning the best director prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the Ministry of Culture said Monday. The director will also be given another NT$500,000 for making it into the main competition of the festival, which will bring the total government reward to NT$5.5 million, according to the ministry, citing Taiwan's reward regulations. Hou's martial arts film "The Assassin" (???) won the best director prize at the French festival on Sunday, giving Hou his first director's award at the festival. "The Assassin," which cost NT$450 million (US$14.74 million) to produce, was granted NT$45 million in government subsidies -- NT$20 million in 2010 and NT$25 million in 2011. The culture ministry has praised the film's innovative marital arts style, imagery, aesthetics and music score. President Ma Ying-jeou (???), Premier Mao Chi-kuo (???) and Culture Minister Hung Meng-chi (???) have all sent congratulatory messages to Hou on his win. (By Christie Chen)
