Parts of southern Taiwan put on high alert against flooding

Taipei, May 24 (CNA) The Chiayi and Pingtung counties and some low-lying areas of Kaohsiung City were put on high alert against possible flooding due to heavy rainfalls across southern Taiwan Sunday, the Water Resources Agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced late Sunday. A quick response team comprised of the personnel from agency, the Taiwan Power Company and other relevant agencies have established to prepare for any emergency situation. Meanwhile, the Alisan Township Office announced late Sunday the suspension of all offices and classes in the township, a famous mountainous scenic area. Most areas of Chiayi County, including Alishan, have accumulated precipitation of over 200 mm Sunday night. The Taiwan Railways Administration said that the Alishan-Chushan section of the Alishan forest railway will be suspended Monday. Chushan is a well-known location for watching sunrise.
