Taiwanese hospitals promoting medical diplomacy in Latin America

Taipei, May 21 (CNA) Several Taiwanese hospitals are offering medical assistance to Taiwan's diplomatic allies in Latin America and the Caribbean, in an effort to promote medical diplomacy, a Taiwanese foreign affairs official said Thursday. Changhua Christian Hospital, based in central Taiwan, has sent a six-member team, including doctors and nurses, to provide medical assistance in St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines from April 5 to May 17, said Lino Cheng (???), deputy director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs. The team is helping to train local medical personnel and also providing medical service to the countries' residents, Cheng said. After the staff return, the hospital will send another six-member team to the two countries to continue its medical assistance during a trip from May 23 to June 14, as part of the hospital's long-term efforts to help improve medical services there, Cheng said. Meanwhile, a team from Taipei-based Cathay General Hospital is in Paraguay, Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in South America, to conduct artificial joint replacement surgeries in cooperation with Paraguay's health ministry and a local hospital, Cheng said. They are scheduled to perform 20 operations, free of charge, during a trip from May 9-22, he added. In addition to the two hospitals, a representative from Taipei Medical University's Center for Management and Development is scheduled to visit the central American country of Panama in June to explore possibilities of bilateral medical cooperation, Cheng said. Taiwan's government has been working with Taiwanese hospitals to closely cooperate with many of its 22 diplomatic allies in providing public health and medical assistance. Most of the allies are Latin American and South Pacific island countries. (By Elaine Hou)
