Foreign spouse supports jobless husband with onion pancakes

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A spouse from the Philippines supported her husband with the preparation and sale of onion pancakes after he was laid off from his job as a secondary school sports teacher.
Legal and organizational changes forced Hsieh Hsien-chieh out of a job. After he went to the Philippines to take advanced classes in the hope of speeding up his obtaining a degree, he returned to Taiwan to find he could no longer enter campus life.
At the instigation of his brother, he learned the pancake skills of Northeastern Chinese cuisine from a Liaoning chef. After his studies and with the full support of his Filipina wife, Ava Gail, he opened a restaurant in his home region of Kinmen.
Gail was Hsieh’s English teacher when he lived in the Philippines. She said she used love to overcome the difficult period in their lives when her husband was unemployed.
