TransAsia flight lands safely after reporting engine failure (update)

Taipei, May 21 (CNA) No casualties were reported Thursday after a TransAsia Airways flight briefly suffered a failure in one of its twin engines, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA). Flight GE5042 departed from Magong Airport in outlying Penghu County at 12:10 p.m. and arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport on time at 12:57 p.m. There were 16 passengers and 4 crew members onboard the ATR 72-500 turbo-prop aircraft when the pilot reported at 12:20 p.m. that one of the engines had failed. The pilot followed standard procedure and was able to restart the engine, said CAA official Yu Yi-shi (???), adding that the plane landed with both engines functioning normally. The incident was not categorized as a flight accident, Yu said, citing the Aviation Safety Council, which said it will not launch an investigation. TransAsia was already in hot water after reporting two deadly air crashes in less than a year, which claimed 91 lives. Last week, its Flight GE670 had to be towed to the gate at Chitose Airport because it was unable to taxi off the runway after landing, due to a mechanical problem. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
