St. Lucia to open embassy in Taiwan in June: official

Taipei, May 21 (CNA) St. Lucia, one of Taiwan's Caribbean diplomatic allies, is set to open an embassy in Taiwan in June, a Taiwanese foreign affairs official responsible for Latin and Central American affairs said Thursday. St. Lucia has selected a location in Taipei for its embassy and is determining who will be its ambassador to Taiwan, said Lino Cheng (???), deputy director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs. Cheng said St. Lucia is finalizing the details of the establishment of its first embassy in Taiwan. "It is scheduled to be opened in mid-June," he added. In February, Alva Baptiste, St. Lucia's minister of external affairs, international trade and civil aviation, visited Taiwan to look for a suitable location for an embassy in an effort to strengthen bilateral ties. The Republic of China and St. Lucia have maintained close cooperation in public health, education, infrastructure and culture since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 2007 following a 10-year hiatus. The two sides first established diplomatic ties in 1984, but St. Lucia switched its recognition to the People's Republic of China in 1997. Of Taiwan's 22 diplomatic allies, St. Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are the only two countries that have not set up embassies here. (By Elaine Hou)
