Ko: stalling of dome improvements even more dangerous

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je responded Thursday after a report provided by the Department of Mass Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) Director Chou Li-liang that it is even more dangerous should the improvement proposal on the Taipei Dome continues to drag on.

Chou mentioned in his report that Farglory’s, the project developer, leniency towards the improvement proposal will result in serious consequences, notably the threat to the nearby Mass Rapid Transit Bannan Line and the former Songshan Tobacco Factory.

The city government ordered the suspension of the dome’s construction immediately after Wednesday’s announcement.

In his hearing at the Taipei City Council on Thursday morning, Chou mentioned that the developer has yet to complete two blocks of foundations on the dome, and that they cannot be halted regardless of the suspension.

When asked by a local reporter just prior to Ko’s hearing at the city council if he consulted Chou before deciding on stopping the construction, the mayor replied, “of course I did.”

Again questioned by the media if he was angry after reading Chou’s report, Ko said the importance is getting Farglory to carve out proposals for improvements.

“I hereby repeat, forget about the past, today it’s me handing out the city’s construction permits. So, that makes me responsible for everything that goes on around here,” he explained.
