Foreign students show off Chinese at NCKU Chinese Singing Contest

National Cheng Kung University hosts the 2015 Chinese Singing Contest which takes place every day afternoon until May 21 at the Chinese Language Center. The contestants come from more than 50 different countries. The audience can vote for their favorite singer every day; the contestant with the highest vote is presented with the Most Popular Award.
National Cheng Kung University has opened the course “Learn Chinese by Singing” for years. There is always a singing competition at the end of the course because the contestants can not only show off their voices, they also present their learning results. Many contestants combine their singing with dances, choreographies, and compositions. Tsai Pei-shan, a staff of the Chinese Language Center, said that the goal of the Chinese Singing Competition is for the students to learn Chinese more relaxingly. Besides marking on the pronunciation, articulation, enunciation and voice during the competition, the judges also want to know why the singer picks his or her songs.
“Everyone spends around 10 hours in preparation and practices. Not only did our Chinese improve, we gained friendship as well,” said Lee Bao-lan, a contestant from Australia.
