Taipei Zoo has new baby giraffe

Taipei, May 18 (CNA) Taipei Zoo's newborn giraffe nicknamed "Hsiao Chang" is being taken care of in an enclosure with his mother and is not ready to meet the public, zoo officials said Monday. After his mother's 15-month pregnancy, Hsiao Chang was born at around 1:50 p.m. on May 13, measuring 180 centimeters tall and weighing 62 kilograms. The baby giraffe looked shaky on his feet within the first hour after birth, but he was looking for his first feeding from his mother -- a sign of a healthy baby giraffe, caretakers said. Hsiao Chang and his mother are currently arranged in the internal enclosure to concentrate on feeding and growing, and the family will not meet the public in the near term as a result, according to the Taipei Zoo.
