Mercury hits 35.4 degrees in Taipei

Taipei, May 18 (CNA) Hot weather continued in Taipei on Monday, with temperatures reaching 35.4 degrees Celsius in the city at around noon, the Central Weather Bureau reported. The high temperature, which was recorded at 12:22 p.m., fell just below the high for the year in the city, which was set on Saturday at 35.6 degrees, according to bureau data. Monday's highest temperature in Taiwan as of the early afternoon was 36.6 degrees recorded in Dawu Township in Taitung County at 1:20 p.m., the bureau said. The mercury in Chiayi County in southern Taiwan also reached 35 degrees around noon, according to the bureau. The scorching heat is expected to continue until Tuesday and be accompanied by afternoon thunderstorms in northern and eastern Taiwan and in mountainous areas across the country. (By Christie Chen)
