Donations for abuse victims urged on International Families Day

Taipei, May 15 (CNA) A local group assisting female victims of violence and their children urged the public on the International Day of Families on Friday to donate money to help these victims of abuse. On average, only 5 percent of domestic violence cases are reported to authorities in Taiwan each year, meaning that domestic violence remains a problem hidden behind closed doors, said Lin Mei-hsun (???), deputy chief executive of the Modern Women's Foundation. Many victims of such violence do not seek help until years later because they feel ashamed, are afraid of what others might think about them, are not financially independent, do not want to worry their families and friends, or do not know how to seek help, Lin said. She urged the public to make a donation to the foundation, which provides sheltering services, psychological counseling, legal services and career guidance and support for over 7,000 victims each year. The foundation said it aimed to assist 7,200 victims this year. Last year, 49,560 people in Taiwan suffered violence at the hands of their present or former spouse or live-in partners, while 18,737 children were victims of domestic violence, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The United Nations' International Day of Families is observed on May 15 every year to promote awareness of issues relating to families. (By Christie Chen)
