10 Taiwanese arrested in Jakarta for alleged online scam

Jakarta, May 13 (CNA) Indonesian police said Tuesday that they have arrested 30 people, including 10 Taiwanese, in North Jakarta for allegedly operating an online scam that targeted credit card users in China and Taiwan. Police raided a warehouse in the affluent suburban community of Pantai Indah Kapuk and arrested the 30 suspects. Twenty-six of them were men and four were women, and 10 of them were Taiwanese and the others were Chinese nationals, police said. According to police, they admitted when questioned to committing fraud and preying on Chinese and Taiwanese nationals, said Heru Pranoto, the director of the Jakarta Police's general crimes unit. In the two months the fraud ring operated in Indonesia, it stole information on their victims' credit cards and used it to make illegal transactions. They told the victims that their relatives had been arrested and they had to wire money for their release, police said. Immigration officials said all members of the fraud ring entered Indonesia on short-stay visas, which is valid for one month, and they applied to extend the visa for another month after its expiration.
