Compal's Q1 earnings drop due to slow season

Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Taiwan's Compal Electronics Inc. (??), the world's second-largest contract maker of laptops, reported a net income decrease of more than 50 percent in first quarter of the year, citing the usual slow season and a strong Taiwan dollar. In the first three months of the year, the company's net income fell by a quarterly 55 percent to NT$2.022 billion (US$66 million), while its revenue was NT$198.112 billion, This translated into an earnings per share (EPS) of NT$0.47, the lowest in the past four quarters. Compal posted a non-operating loss of NT$647 million for the January-March quarter, including foreign exchange losses of NT$544 million as a result of a strong Taiwan dollar. In the fourth quarter of last year, the company registered a net income of NT$4.484 billion and an EPS of NT$1.01. Compal shares ended down 3.2 percent at NT$27.2 Monday in Taipei before the release of the earnings data. (By Jeffrey Wu)
