Trip to improve communication with U.S.: DPP head

Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen (???) said Sunday one of her goals during her upcoming visit to the United States is to improve her party's communication with different sectors of the U.S. Speaking to reporters after an event in Taipei to celebrate Buddha's birthday, Tsai said there are three goals during her scheduled visit to the United States on May 29. One of the goals is to meet with government officials, lawmakers and think tank experts in Washington D.C., and exchange ideas with them on issues related to Taiwan-U.S. relations and security in the Asia-Pacific region, Tsai said. The communication between the DPP and different sectors of the U.S. has been smooth over recent years, and it is hoped that the upcoming trip will give the two sides an opportunity to talk face-to-face on a deeper level and gain a better understanding of the other's position, she said. Another one of her goals is to meet with overseas Taiwanese in several cities to express her gratitude for their long-time support, said Tsai, who was nominated in mid-April as her party's candidate for the 2016 presidential election. Lastly, she plans to visit local industries and meet with young people to talk about Taiwan's democracy and future, she said. Tsai will visit Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York, Houston and San Francisco and deliver a talk at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in the U.S. capital. She is scheduled to return to Taiwan June 9. (By Yeh Su-ping and Christie Chen)
