ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Greek authorities say about 170 migrants in a wooden boat trying to reach European shores illegally have been located off southern Greece and are being transferred to a tugboat that will carry them to a safe port.
The coast guard says the Italian vessel was directed to pick up the migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, some 60 nautical miles south of the Peloponnese region, and would take them to Greece.
There were no immediate reports of any of the migrants being in poor health. Their nationalities were unknown.
Greece is the second-biggest entry point -- after Italy -- for refugees and economic migrants seeking a better life in the European Union. So far, about 26,000 people have arrived this year, a five-fold increase on the year.
