Taiwan congratulates U.K. on completion of elections

Taipei, May 8 (CNA) Taiwan congratulated the United Kingdom on Friday for the successful completion of its general elections, in which the Conservative Party won an absolute majority, and expressed the hope of deepening cooperation with the U.K.'s new government. The Republic of China (Taiwan) government "hopes to continue deepening the mutually beneficial cooperation with the U.K. in all domains based on the existing solid foundation," Taiwan's foreign ministry said in a congratulatory statement to the U.K. government. The two countries hold the same values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law and share mutual interests, it said. "Our countries have in recent years enjoyed significant progress in bilateral cooperation and exchanges in trade, investment, culture, education, and technology, among other areas," the statement said. The ministry touted the U.K. as one of Taiwan's important trade partners and the second most popular destination for students from Taiwan studying overseas. In a result that stunned many in the U.K. after polls had called the race a dead heat, Prime Minister David Cameron of the Conservative Party won re-election with an outright majority of at least 330 seats in the 650-member House of Commons. Commenting on the results, Taiwanese lawmaker Lin Yu-fang (???) of the ruling Kuomintang said Taiwan has many friends in the Conservative Party and thought it to be good for Taiwan for Cameron to remain prime minister.
