Taiwan has vital part in U.S.' Asia-Pacific policies: Kerry

Washington, May 7 (CNA) Taiwan is an important security and economic partner of the United States and plays a key role in the country's Asia-Pacific policies, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said. "Taiwan is a key component of U.S. Asia-Pacific policies, including the rebalance to Asia. The United States continues to expand and enhance its strong and multifaceted unofficial relationship with Taiwan," Kerry said in a written statement. The statement was made in response to a question submitted Feb. 25 by Rep. Ed Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a strong supporter of Taiwan on Capitol Hill. Kerry also described Taiwan as an important security and economic partner of the U.S., an important part of global value chains, a vibrant democracy, and America's 10th-largest trading partner. He said the U.S. continues to deepen its engagement with Taiwan on trade and investment issues through the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement process, and welcomes Taiwan's interest in future accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The U.S. works cooperatively with Taiwan in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum to promote regional economic integration initiatives, including enhanced trade and investment, Kerry said. Consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act, the U.S. makes available to Taiwan defense articles and services necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability, he added. "Collectively, these activities demonstrate our continued commitment to Taiwan's peace, security, and prosperity as part of the U.S. rebalance," he said. (By Tony Liao and Y.F. Low)
