Australia makes strides with Taiwanese runners in tourism campaign (update)

Taipei, May 7 (CNA) A marathon event along Australia's world-famous Gold Coast will be the centerpiece of the country's latest tourism campaign in Taiwan as local people are getting more interested in running marathons overseas, tourism officials of Australia's Queensland government said Thursday. The annual Goad Coast Airport Marathon is seeing more and more runners from Taiwan, momentum Australia hopes to capitalize on in its recent tourism campaign, said Kimberly Chien (???), marketing manager for Tourism Queensland's Taiwan office. Since the office started promoting sports tourism in the region about two years ago, more Taiwanese have shown interests in running at the Gold Coast, Chien said. There were 438 Taiwanese runners in the event last year, which saw 36,000 participants, she said. While on-line registration for this year's event to be held July 4-5 will continue through July 3, the office said, 240 Taiwanese have already signed up. It is hoped that events like this will attract Taiwanese to tour Australia, which had accommodated 111,000 Taiwanese tourists last year, according to Chien. Among them, some 58,000 visited Queensland, which holds cities with big Taiwanese populations such as Brisbane and Gold Coast, she said. At the marathon promotion event on Thursday, celebrity runners said they are all geared up for the 42.195-kilometer challenge. Michael Hu (??), who also participated in the event last year, said the atmosphere of the Gold Coast marathon is what attracts him the most. The whole city is in carnival mode during the event," he said. "It is a dream race for a runner." Gin Oy (???), who will be attending the marathon for the first time, said the event could be perfect for marathon beginners thanks to mild weather and a flat course. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
