LONDON (AP) -- The wife of 1966 World Cup-winner Jimmy Greaves says the former England striker faces a "long period of rehabilitation" after suffering a severe stroke.
The 75-year-old Greaves is in intensive care in a hospital after his second stroke in three years on Sunday.
His wife, Irene, provided an update on Tuesday, saying "Jimmy is having to do what he is told, and understands the seriousness of what has happened to him."
In a statement, she says Tottenham's all-time top scorer faces "a long, slow road to recovery and ... a long period of rehabilitation."
Greaves, with 44 goals in 57 internationals, is the country's fourth-highest scorer.
