Taiwan launches new coastguard patrol vessel

Kaohsiung, May 5 (CNA) A locally built vessel was launched in Kaohsiung on Tuesday, as an addition to the Taiwan's Coast Guard fleet in an initiative to improve the country's maritime law enforcement capabilities. The "Taitung Vessel" (???) is expected to be delivered formally to the Coast Guard in February 2016, said Chen Shih-chieh (???), deputy head of the Coast Guard Administration (CGA), at the launch ceremony. It is one of four 1,000-ton patrol vessels being built in Taiwan to boost the Coast Guard's ability to enforce maritime law. The new boat will be based in the Port of Hualien and will be deployed to patrol the waters off the eastern counties of Yilan, Hualien and Taitung, Chen said. The vessel, which is 87.6 meters long and 12.8 meters wide, is the biggest Coast Guard patrol and rescue vessel to be deployed off eastern Taiwan, he added. It has a maximum speed of 20 knots, a range of 6,000 nautical miles and is equipped with a 20mm rotary cannon, T75 machine gun and a powerful water cannon. The CGA is expected to take delivery of the other three patrol vessels by the end of June 2016. (By Chang Che-fon and Elaine Hou)
