Ma positive about insistence on '1992 consensus' in Chu-Xi meeting

Taipei, May 4 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) was positive about both Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (???) and Communist Party of China General Secretary Xi Jinping (???) speaking of continuing to deepen cross-strait exchanges based on the "1992 consensus" during their meeting on Monday, a Presidential Office spokesman said. The "1992 consensus" refers to a tacit understanding reached between Taiwanese and Chinese representatives in 1992 that there is only one China and both sides are free to interpret what that means. President Ma thinks that in the 23 years since the consensus, history has proved that cross-Taiwan Strait relations prosper if both sides abide by the tacit understanding and suffer if deviating from it, according to Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen (???). "Our 'one China' is based on the Republic of China Constitution and our stance is 'one China is the Republic of China,' and it is by no means "two Chinas," or "one China, one Taiwan," or "Taiwan independence," Chen said. Meanwhile, Lai Shyh-bao (???), director of the KMT Policy Committee, who accompanied Chu on the trip, said that during the meeting with Xi, Chu said the most important thing in cross-strait exchanges is to shelve disputes. Both sides have in the past talked about "seeking common ground and shelving differences," but now it's time to go further to "seek common ground and respect differences." He said that development on both sides of the Taiwan Strait has diverged widely in the past decades, and that Taiwan strongly wants to participate in international organizations, which China should face squarely. Lai said that respecting differences is to seek a way to "deal with the differences." China should understand, tolerate and even help Taiwan join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which are both Chinese initiatives, Lai said.
