Kaohsiung student recognized for devotion to family amid hardship

Kaohsiung, May 3 (CNA) "To save up enough money to help our mother buy a new house" is the wish made for the upcoming Mother's Day by the Lin sisters, whose filial piety was recognized at an award ceremony held Sunday in Kaohsiung. In contrast to other award recipients, who were accompanied by their family members, the poignant sight of the Lin sisters alone at the venue drew the attention of reporters. Lin Chia-feng (???), aged 11, is a fifth-grader at the Kaohsiung Municipal Chu-Hu Elementary School. She has two other sisters aged 15 and 8. She said that her family once worked as farmers in neighboring Pingtung County, but when her father died three years ago, they relocated to Kaohsiung with their mother, who now runs a business renting and setting up tables, chairs and crockery for catering events. The Lin sisters do as much to help their mother as possible, traveling with her wherever the catering business takes them on weekends and on holidays. Lin told CNA that they had just completed a catering event the previous evening and had to wash about 5,000 dishes and they would be ready to go to work later in the evening after the award ceremony. The hardship has forged a strong bond between the Lin sisters, who strive to relieve some of the burden carried by their mother. Lin said that she once washed more than 10,000 dishes for 14 hours in a row. Her hands grew raw from washing dishes from morning till night. "Back then, our hands were too small and wearing gloves would have slowed our pace," she said. Often, the four of us would form an assembly line, washing dishes into the early morning, Lin said. "Me and my younger sister would be most prone to falling asleep, so we often take turns waking each other up", she added. The story of the Lin sisters was first made public by Kao Chien-hung (???), Lin Chia-feng's fifth-grade homeroom teacher, who was moved by her dedication and entered her in the filial piety awards. Kao said that despite their situation, Lin Chia-feng maintains a stellar academic performance and was even elected class leader. The Lin sisters are such good children that the honor should be shared by all three of them," said one of their neighbors. (By Cheng Chi-feng and Ted Chen)
